"Waste not the smallest thing created, for grains of sand make mountains, and atomies infinity." - E. Knight
East of India was started by John A Yris and Anne Spratling in 1991. John had travelled extensively while Anne had studied fashion and textile design at Canterbury Art College. While journeying through Asia they met a talented family who made the most charming handmade goods from local natural materials. By working closely with these craftsmen a small range of products was put together. Financial help came through the Princes Trust in the form of a loan that paid for the first consignment of stock and it's transportation to England.
Today, all of their products are designed with love and care at their studio in Folkestone and they still work closely with those original artisans. They now employ numerous other family members and friends to satisfy demand. Thanks to the popularity of the products, they are still able to work together as family groups and earn a living using traditional skills passed down through the generations.
The East of India team in Folkestone has also evolved and grown, many of the staff have been there since the early days. They respond with energy and enthusiasm to the ever changing requirements of a small business.
We stock a range of East of India products, please keep checking back as our stock is updated regularly.
